About Memory Foam

Memory Foam or visco-elastic foam was originally developed in the late 1960’s by NASA to be used in the seats of spacecraft as means of helping to absorb the extreme pressure created by “G” forces when taking off and re-entering the earth’s atmosphere. The “G” forces put tremendous pressure on an astronaut’s body and could be quite painful. The development of the memory foam helped to significantly reduce this pressure allowing for a much more bearable flight for the astronauts.

Due to its pressure relieving properties, memory foam was also put to good use in hospitals and other medical facilities as a means of helping long term care or bed ridden patients to be more comfortable and also to help lessen the problem of bed sores and skin ulcers.

In the early 1990’s memory foam was developed to be use in a mattress form for use by consumers in their homes. Many sleep studies had shown that the pressure points caused by typical innerspring or coil mattresses caused people to have improper blood flow which results in significant tossing and turning at night, this interrupted the deep sleep cycle which caused people to wake up feeling still very tired. Memory foam is temperature sensitive so when you lay down on it, it reacts to your body temperature and molds itself around your body. This cradling effect offer much less resistance on your body, thus less pressure points and significantly reduced tossing and turning, which will result in a much deeper sleep. It also provides great lumbar support, in particular for your lower lumbar area, where typical coil mattresses tend to leave a gap in this area, the memory fills in the gap and provides even support.

More recently, the development of Gel infused Memory foam has advanced the comfort of the mattresses even more. By infusing a special gel into the visco-elastic it allows for an even more comfortable feel as well as a more breathable sleep surface.

When combined with an Adjustable Sleep System, memory foam and Gel mattresses can truly be an ideal choice for many people. The combination of outstanding pressure relief, ideal lumbar support and amazing comfort is truly something anyone would find hard to deny.
